Congratulations to Elizabeth Nelson, Winner of the SLA Illinois Leadership Summit Stipend

Elizabeth Nelson, Knowledge Analyst at UOP and Adjunct Reference Librarian at McHenry County College, is this year's recipient of the stipend to the SLA Leadership Summit taking place January 27-29. Read on to learn why she desired this stipend.

Elizabeth writes:

I have held many leadership positions – many of them formal roles, but I have found that true leadership does not always come with a title. The leaders of a group are those who motivate the group to be more than the sum of its parts. So, while I will detail a few of my formal roles, I do not think this tells the whole story, as I have often stood outside of the spotlight and filled a more supporting leadership role.

Most recently I have been involved with two efforts in SLA to help newer librarians become part of the field. One of these is SLA’s First Five. I have taken a role on this task force to create a web solution that will allow new librarians to learn and connect with others in the field. The SLA KM Division Student Liaison Committee has a similar goal, and part of the work that was done last year was to develop a mentoring program that would connect newer librarians with the larger field of librarianship.

In the workplace I have led the effort in our Expert Interview process, expanding the program from one expert per year in 2006 and 2007 to 19 experts in 2008. Working on cross-functional teams is even more challenging than leading groups that have the same big-picture goals, since there are sometimes conflicts in expectations of a program.

Even though I have had good experiences in leadership roles, I believe that true leadership begins with being a good role model and mentor to others. I have already begun my journey to becoming a leader in the library field by having several articles published in our professional literature and being a member of the 2009 class of Synergy: The Illinois Library Leadership Initiative, but the next step is to become more visible through more formal leadership roles in the library community.

My professional development goal for this coming year is to take on a formal leadership role in SLA Illinois. From my committee work with SLA and ALA I have developed an understanding of the process and Synergy has helped me to explore my own leadership style. The SLA Leadership Summit would give me the tools to apply my experiences to leadership within SLA.

Congratulations to SLA Illinois' 2009 Award Winners!

Click on a title to read more about this year's recipients and their contributions. Thank you all for your continual service to our chapter.
Library Partner Award: Buzzy Basch
Up and Coming Award: Laura Fu
Author Award: Carla Owens
Web 2.0 Award: Dianna Wiggins
Library Champion Award: Nancy Maloney
Outstanding Achievement Award: Katrina Perez

Library Partner Award is selected by the team who collects sponsors and funds to allow us to have meetings at a reasonable rate. If you think our meeting prices are high, imagine what they would be if we didn’t have sponsorship from our partners. This is a tough decision because we appreciate ALL contributions.

In 2009 we recognize Buzzy Basch, president of Prenax Basch Subscriptions, who has been a long-time sponsor of the SLA IL chapter's Annual Business Meeting. This year was no different as once again, Buzzy signed on to be the September meeting sponsor. Although the meeting date was changed and Buzzy wasn’t able to attend in person, Prenax Basch provided the funds. Not only did Prenax Basch's generous sponsorship help cover the costs of the Annual Business Meeting in September, we boosted attendance at the November 6 Innovate, Create, Succeed Workshop! Buzzy Basch's donation paid for the cost of an Amazon Kindle which was raffled at the seminar. Feedback from the seminar included this: "one of the best workshops for special librarians ever." Thank you Buzzy, and Prenax Basch for your support.

Up and Coming Award is presented to a relatively new Illinois Chapter member who through work and professional involvement shows promise of becoming an outstanding member of the profession. Our 2009 up and comer is currently a student at Dominican University. Laura Fu is an example of librarianship expanding to non-traditional media; she identified librarianship as the necessary tool chest for her chosen profession even though that isn’t what her employers have called her positions. Laura began her career as a news archivist in Baltimore and now works here in Chicago in video asset management. Laura has designed a system for cataloging all in-house materials and recently pitched the idea for a new service at her employer: stock footage provider. It was received well and will be another responsibility of hers in 2010!

Laura has participated on the 2010 program planning committee for SLA Illinois and has also attended the Association of Moving Image Archivists conference.

What sealed the decision of the Awards Committee in favor of Laura is this: even as a student at Dominican, Laura has provided internships for other students for three semesters. She is committed to bringing recent graduates into her unique environment to expand their education and gain experience. As Laura says, “We rely a great deal on our interns, in testing, implementation and application. I’ve really enjoying managing their participation, mentoring them as new members of the field and also learning a great deal for my own career.”

In recognition of her entry into librarianship, paving the way in uncharted territory, and generosity in bringing others along on the journey, we are proud to present to her the Up and Comer Award, 2009.

Author Award is awarded to the Illinois Chapter member who has published noteworthy work within the "Informant", other professional literature, a trade journal, popular press, or in-house publication. This award most often goes to someone who publishes in the field of librarianship or information science, but we had a unique opportunity this year to recognize a long-time Illinois chapter member who has served on numerous committees and as a past president and who now has what she calls a “dream job.” This dream has included the opportunity to co-author the book Brookfield Zoo and the Chicago Zoological Society with Doug Deuchler.

Doug explains the process in an interview in the Wednesday Journal on June 16, 2009.

“When the Arcadia Publishing company heard I was working part-time as a Motor Safari tram guide at Brookfield Zoo, an editor approached me about doing a new book for their "Images of America" series. You may have seen these paperback illustrated histories of various neighborhoods, communities and towns with their vintage sepia photos on the covers. I'd previously done books on Oak Park, Cicero, Berwyn, and Maywood. But the Arcadia folks won't really rest until every corner of the entire nation has its own book. So they told me they were especially intent on adding a Brookfield Zoo title to their list of publications in time to celebrate the zoo's 75th anniversary this summer. Was I interested? Of course I said yes...A book sounded like a wonderful project, and this time I would be working with a co-author, Carla W. Owens, zoo archivist and manager of library services. We made a good creative team. During the course of completing the book, Carla and I found a lot of amazing stuff. We located photos and publicity materials that had not been seen in seven decades. In the "attic" level of one of the big commissary barns on the south side of the zoo, we discovered displays and souvenirs dating back to the early 1930s.”

Carla, congratulations for becoming a published author and for demonstrating the versality and variety of skills inherent in information professionals.

Web 2.0 Award will be awarded to an individual chapter member or their Information Center who has used Web 2.0 technology for either the marketing, promotion, communication, knowledge management, or training efforts of their own organization or for the Illinois Chapter of SLA.

In Enterprise 2.0: New Collaborative Tools for your Organization’s Toughest Challenges by Andrew McAfee, the author describes the trend in the use of technology to bring people together and let them interact, without specifying how they should do so. People collaborate in order to get work done and solve problems. Tools like Twitter, Facebook, Linked In, wikis, and blogs offer significant improvements in areas such as generating, capturing and sharing knowledge (isn’t that us?); letting people find helpful colleagues (we do that!); tapping into new sources of information and expertise (hello!); and harnessing the “wisdom of crowds.”

Diana Wiggins has been at the forefront of modeling Enterprise 2.0 with an SLA Ililinois chapter Facebook page, promoting the online discussion of alignment, tweeting on professional issues with more than 100 followers, and on a more personal note, creating a Caring Bridge on steroids site for family members dealing with a serious illness. Diana is traveling this week and is not with us physically, but I cannot think of a better way to share this announcement with her than by using technology to send her congratulations. If you Tweet congratulations, please use the hashtag #slail.

Library Champion Award is presented to the parent organization, individual or other entity that has shown support to special libraries/information centers through speaking, writing, or advocacy. This year our library champion contributed to the SLA centennial celebration when she used her personal contacts to request a proclamation from Richard M. Daley, mayor of the city of Chicago, and congratulations from the Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian, Jesse White, honoring SLA's 100th anniversary. At the May 27th monthly meeting, in addition to having a panel of speakers addressing how we can align our services with strategic business needs to maximize our value, we also had a special celebration at that meeting with centennial related books & pens as prizes, party hats and favors, and a very special cake to celebrate the centennial. Next to the cake when it was on display were the original congratulatory letters from Mayor Daley and Jesse White.

Nancy Maloney helped to make the SLA IL chapter celebration of SLA national's centennial anniversary extra special. At the May meeting we enjoyed seeing and reading the actual letters she requested and received from Daily and White, and in addition, both letters are clickable from the SLA webpage where there are just a few greetings listed from other national politicos.

Nancy has been the Electronic Resources Librarian on assignment from Library Associates Companies at BP in Naperville, IL since 2005. She is a member of the WebJunction Illinois Advisors Team, the WebJunction Illinois Subject Curator for Special Librarians, and she participates on DuPage Library System's Technology and Marketing Committees. Nancy is also a state of Illinois Synergist; Synergy is the Illinois Library Leadership Initiative Program. Nancy has spoken at ILA, the Illinois Library Association annual conference, on marketing twice. A report on the effort of the BP Library to do "buzz marketing" resulted in a recent mention of Nancy in the new ALA editions book called, Building a Buzz: Libraries & Word-of-Mouth Marketing by Peggy Barber and Linda Wallace. Thank you, Nancy.

Outstanding Achievement Award is awarded to an Illinois Chapter member or Committee who has exhibited outstanding, unique or beyond-the-call-of-duty service to the Chapter. As it happens, this year’s outstanding achievement award winner is no stranger to the podium -- in 2006, the Outstanding Achievement Award went to the group contributing to the vision and hard work of the Informant Committee in developing, implementing, and maintaining a new generation communication tool for the Illinois Chapter. In fact, a search of the SLA Illinois web site illustrates how wide and deep our Outstanding Achievement Award winner’s participation is in chapter activities. It ranges from hosting dine-arounds to volunteering for committee assignments to coordinating a web site conversion to coordinating yet another web site conversion to attending the 2007 Leadership Summit and to accepting the presidency of our chapter. As one contributor stated: “Not to take away what others have done, but she really turned it up a notch!”

Katrina Perez, in recognition of your years of service with our web site, the achievements of the chapter under your watch as President, for your grace under pressure, your ability to include so many others in chapter activities, and for your contributions that are sure to follow, congratulations for Outstanding Achievement. submitted by Bobbie Goering, Joyce Fedezcko, Penny Sympson

SLA IL Chapter Award Introductions

For those unable to attend that cold blustery night, here is an edited version of the award introductions given by Bobbie Goering on each of the winners. Congratulations again, to one and all.

Author

For readers of the Informant, Suzanne Arist is a familiar name. She is honored tonight for her 2008 contributions on Web 3.0 at the National Association of Realtors and her profiles of Judy Alspach and Karen Krupka. We also honor Suzanne for her entire body of work on the Informant and other library publications.

Up and coming

The up and coming award is presented to an Illinois SLA member who demonstrates drive and ambition. Not much says drive and ambition more than becoming an active member of the Illinois chapter and commuting to SLA meetings and events while working at a law firm in Detroit and finishing an MLIS degree at Wayne State University. The 2008 Up and Coming award is awarded to Andrea Szabo Tellander.

In May 2008, Andrea finished her M.L.I.S in Special Libraries and became a resident of Illinois. Shortly after, she began volunteering for committee work within the association. She participated in the Awards Committee, where she handled communications and played a key role in facilitating member involvement. She will also be a contributor and rolling editor for the Informant.

Andrea, although new to the profession, is dedicated to cultivating growth within SLA-IL and librarianship now and in the years to come.

Library Partner and Green Awareness

Christina Stoll is a Metropolitan Library System (MLS) Consultant providing support, answering questions about all facets of librarianship and library work, and arranging training and networking opportunities with a focus on special libraries. She has the knowledge to provide insight on advocacy and legislation, grant development, marketing initiatives, and staff training and development. Christina’s work helps the special library community in Illinois grow and develop new skills.

Christina is currently coordinating the MLS' planned program on going green by Anca Novaconvici earning Christina and the MLS the first ever Green awards.

Green and eco-friendly are two terms that are mentioned and discussed frequently in the media, in businesses, and by individuals today. Going green is a trend that has arisen from a growing awareness that global warming is a pressing issue. It reflects the recognition that we all have an impact, and are impacted by it, and that each of us can take action to have a positive rather than a negative impact on the planet.

Thank you Christina for raising the issue and providing a forum for learning and sharing.

Web 2.0 (Innovation Leader)

In past years, we have awarded technology efforts. This year we expanded the award from library technology to Web 2.0 efforts.

The 2008 Gartner Hype Cycle for new technologies lists Social Computing Platforms just past the Peak of Inflated Expectations and Web 2.0 as entering the Trough of Disillusionment. (For those not familiar with Hype Cycles, the next stages are Slope of Enlightenment and Plateau of Productivity.) We are awash with possibilities and the organizations we support are struggling to make sense of it all. We have challenges: being a source of information, understanding the options, and modeling social networks.

Our Innovation & Technology Leader is a self-described “ancient librarian always interested in learning from other librarians.” She is a member of the Web 2.0 Library ning, Ziggs, Facebook, KM in Practice, NAYMZ, Twitter, Plaxo, and probably more. With 99.11% of the search engine market share divided between Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Ask, IXQuick is her search engine of choice. She is well known among SLA Illinois discussion list members for urging us to explore the SLA Innovation Laboratory. She worked on the SLA Innovation Lab committee chaired by Stephen Abrams and Cindy Romaine, and worked at the SLA kiosk in Seattle demonstrating it. A nomination letter described her as “always-cheery, forward-thinking champion of her profession”: Joyce Fedeczko.

Library Champion

In March 2008, Penny Sympson shared a video she created with the SLA community with no strings attached -– she encouraged us each to share this video with our communities. This YouTube video advertises the power of special librarians. Who can forget the scene where Penny lays one hand on her laptop, touches a finger to the forehead of the information seeker and the subsequent jolt of knowledge transfer? The tag line is “Need information? Contact your special librarian today."

By April 16 of last year, the special segment had been viewed 1,472 times. Links to the special segment have been found posted on several blogs/newsletters, including:

	a. American Libraries Direct (go all the way to the bottom)
b. Webjunction Illinois
d. Ilovelibraries.org (ALA)

For crafting such a creative message and for sharing her creativity, SLA Illinois recognizes Penny Sympson as Library Champion 2008.

Outstanding achievement

If one were to ask the recipient of our outstanding achievement award about her contributions to the Illinois Chapter, she would say, “Oh heavens! I haven’t done anything, except attend a lot of meetings and serve on some committees…..”

There are three characteristics that outstanding members of this chapter share:The first is the willingness -– I could say eagerness -- to give time and attention to Illinois SLA. As a former member of the leadership team for this chapter, I was forever heartened and frankly, sometimes surprised, by the number of people who would respond to a phone call or discussion list call for help with a committee or project. This year’s recipient of the Outstanding Achievement award is one of those who can be counted as having open hands, accepting behind the scenes tasks with grace and serenity, a person who does the little but extremely necessary tasks to make a project or task or meeting run smoothly.

The second characteristic that outstanding members of this chapter share is continuous improvement, always learning, remembering the theories of our profession that have stood the test of centuries while moving forward to adapt to new times with new tools & new technologies, never retiring in place. This year’s recipient of the Outstanding Achievement award is one of those who can be counted for keeping an open mind. She is forever interested in learning. She supports the chapter with regular attendance at meetings and events. Just this past week -- and this impressed me because most people I know don’t recall the cataloging class in their MLS program with great warmth – this member shared her interest in attending a seminar on the new cataloging rules.

The third characteristic that outstanding members of this chapter share is appreciating our diversity while striving to be inclusive. We define “special” loosely -– after all, we are all special -– and we open our doors to librarians and information professionals and knowledge managers from all types of organizations. We encourage students, we support those who are between jobs, we strive to provide interesting programs no matter the arc of one’s career. This year’s recipient of the Outstanding Achievement award is known for her open heart, her welcoming style, and her interest in others. She is interesting AND interested.

Ladies and gentlemen, in honor of her years of service in our profession and for her open hands, open mind, open heart: please join me in congratulating the recipient of the 2008 Outstanding Achievement award: Donna Lenfest.

There's Still Time to Apply for A Few Annual Conference Stipends!

By Eileen Davenport, Senior Researcher, BMO Capital Markets

The benefits of attending SLA’s Annual Conference are innumerable, but the cost of attendance can sometimes be prohibitive. In this economy the availability of corporate underwriting is a benefit few can rely upon, but the continuing education sessions offered are too important to pass-up. For those who want to attend the 2009 convention and could benefit from an individual bail-out, various SLA chapters and divisions offer scholarships, stipends or grants to those intrepid enough to apply (and who also meet the eligibility requirements).

DEADLINE IS MARCH 16, 2009
Professional Grants & Student Stipends – SLA Business & Finance Division
The Business & Finance Division offers up to six total professional grant and student stipend awards of $1,500 to cover the cost of attending the Annual Conference. Anyone who has been a member of the Division for at least a year can apply for a Professional Grant. Those applying for the professional grant must submit an essay, a resume, and an application form.

Student stipend applicants must be: first-time conference attendees, enrolled in a MLIS program for the 2008/2009 school year, have an interest in business librarianship and join the Business & Finance Division by March 1 of the conference year.

After the Conference, all recipients must write essays for The Bulletin and agree to serve on a committee. Further details are traditionally posted in the winter Business & Finance Bulletin, which will soon be posted to the Division’s website - http://units.sla.org/division/dbf/news/current.html. (You can read the essays from last year's recepients in the Fall issue).

There is a strong tradition of Illinois Chapter members being recipients of these Division awards – past professional & student winners are listed on the Divison website http://units.sla.org/division/dbf/awards/pastwinners.html.

The Marion E. Sparks Award for Professional Development -Â Chemistry Division.
In 2009, the award is a $1,500 stipend and all student members and new professional members (joining after January 2008) are eligible. All applicants must be a member of the Division by February 23, 2009 to be eligible.

To apply, you must write a brief essay outlining your personal objectives for professional development, include a resume and the names of two references, and prepare a budget of your expected conference expenses. The Division recommends, but does not require, registration in a Chemistry Division or other Continuing Education course.

The deadline for all applications is March 9, 2009. For more information, go to http://www.sla.org/division/dche/sparks.htm

Joe Ann Clifton Student Award 2009 - Information Technology Division.
Interested MLIS students will receive one year’s student membership in SLA and reimbursement of up to $1,500 in documented conference expenses.

Applicants must prepare a paper, addressing a practical topic in the use of information technology, to be published in b/ITe, the official division newsletter. For more information, see http://sla-divisions.typepad.com/itbloggingsection/2008/12/sla-it-joe-ann-clifton-student-award-2009.html.

The deadline for applications is January 30, 2009.

Additional Resources
In 2008 the Engineering Division sponsored three awards for the 2008 conference. Last year, the deadline for all three was March 3, 2008.

Elsevier/SLA Engineering Librarian of the Year Award.
This award for experienced professionals comes with a $1500 stipend. Sponsored jointly by Elsevier and the Division, this award aims to highlight the accomplishments and contributions of members to the engineering librarian profession. Nominations are required, but self-nominations are encouraged.
To be eligible, nominees must be a member of good standing for one year in the Engineering Division as of January 1 of the year of the award. Distinguished achievement within engineering librarianship, whether through the job, the Engineering Division or within the industry at large is required though the Awards Committee may choose to recognize ongoing, long-term contributions.

Inspec Travel Stipend Award.
Inspec sponsored a $1200 travel stipend for a library school student to travel to the Annual Conference. Last year, applicants had to submit an essay that addressed a given scenario. Further eligibility requirements included student membership in SLA and being a first-time conference attendee.

IEEE Continuing Education Travel Stipend.
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Continuing Education Stipend was awarded to the Engineering Division member who submitted the best essay on how the applicant will benefit professionally from a continuing education course and who has been a member of the Division for at least one year as of January 1.
The winner is required to submit an article on how the continuing education course helped either in library applications or professionally.

For more information on the Engineering Division’s awards, go tohttp://units.sla.org/division/deng/

This is only a guide to what has been announced or what has been offered in the past, but the downturn has had an effect on the scholarships as well. The Food, Agriculture and Nutrition Division will not be offering a travel stipend in 2009. It is possible that other Divisions will not offer or will offer reduced awards this year, but it is still worth checking out. Other units and divisions within SLA have offered awards in the past but current information is not available on the website at this date. The SLA page with Annual Conference related awards, is http://www.sla.org/content/learn/scholarship/otherscholar.cfm
