Here’s more about the awards and the accomplishments of the winners:

The Up and Coming Award is presented to a relatively new Illinois chapter member who, through work and professional involvement, shows promise of becoming an outstanding member of the profession. Eugene Giudice received the Up and Coming Award for his awesome job in taking care of the many details involved in arranging our meetings this year, and for his overall high-level of engagement with the Chapter and the Board.

The Vendor Relations Award was presented to Joyce Fedeczko for the persistence and grace which have resulted in mutually beneficial relationships between the Chapter and its sponsors.

The Outstanding Achievement Award was presented to each of the members of the Informant team and to their Web site collaborator for contributing to the vision and hard work of the Informant Committee in developing, implementing, and maintaining a new generation communication tool for the Illinois Chapter. The Informants consist of Jim Obst, Karen Tschantz, Peggy Jones, Suzanne Arist, and Lenore Glanz of the Informant. Katrina Perez manages the Web site.

Laura Ikens received the Communications & Marketing Award for the crisp, effective, and regular communications that have helped so much to keep us all informed of the activities of the Chapter and complementary organizations.

The Library Partner Award is given to the vendor whose partnering with the Illinois chapter was noteworthy this year. Library Associates was chosen not only for its financial support, but also for the grace and generosity of its support of the volunteer activities of its employees who are our members.

Jan Sykes received the Library Champion Award for her many contributions to the public discussion of information services, for her writing, and for her generosity in using her extensive network of contacts and colleagues to benefit individual librarians and the profession as a whole. She has helped many of us make the kind of personal connections that lead to the next career move or accomplishment in their organizations. She is a frequent speaker at SLA conferences and in many other forums, as well as having many articles and papers to her name.

The Excellence in Professional Development Award may be inadequate to represent the vision, conviction, and passion that Lorri Zipperer brings to her work in the area of patient safety. Medical error is estimated by some researchers to be something like the fifth largest cause of preventable death in this country. That’s why Lorri has written and contributed to articles and handbooks and has planned and presented workshops to communicate to administrators and to librarians that public and hospital library professionals can contribute to improvements in the safety of hospital patients.

In partnership wth an organization called Consumers Advancing Patient Safety and with Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Lorri has written a Guide to Patient Safety and participated in workshops and seminars in area libraries. Congratulations go to Lorri for insisting on reminding librarians and their administrations of the link between knowledge and health.
