Making Things Happen: The SLA Illinois Discussion List Committee

The e-mail list for SLA Illinois connects our membership by sending information directly to members’ electronic mailboxes. The e-mail list has undergone some improvements this year in an effort to respond to members’ requests and needs.

Chapter members indicated that they felt they were receiving too many messages from SLA Illinois that were duplicative. In order to reduce the number of e-mails, but still keep members up to date on chapter events, the Public Relations committee now sends out a weekly calendar that includes detailed event information. Other informational messages are sent by members as necessary.

We have also combined the two e-mail lists for SLA Illinois into one list, SLA-ILINFO, in order to make sure we are communicating with the entire membership. If you would like to post to the list, you need to send the message from your e-mail account that is registered with SLA-ILINFO. For example, if you receive SLA messages at your work account, you need to post from the work account. The listserv system automatically deletes any messages from senders it does not recognize. Large messages, or messages with attachments, will be stuck in a queue for the list administrator to release. Smaller messages that include links, rather than attachments, will be sent without having to be released.

The e-mail address for postings is: sla-ilinfo@lists.prairienet.org. If you feel that you are not receiving messages, you can re-subscribe to the list at https://mail.prairienet.org/mailman/listinfo/sla-ilinfo or send an e-mail to the list administrator, Sarah Palmer, at palmers@staff.abanet.org.

The SLA-ILINFO e-mail list is hosted by the Prairienet Community Network at the University of Illinois. The service has been experiencing some challenges this year, due to spam and virus attacks on their system. Therefore, messages might not be sent out as instantaneously as in the past if the system is overloaded. Prairienet is attempting to make improvements while working within their budget constraints.

Responding to Chapter members means that we have fewer messages, but they are jam-packed with information, so be sure and check out the e-mails that you receive from SLA-ILINFO. Also, make sure that the SLA e-mails are not being routed to a junk or spam folder.

As a point of interest, the number of emails per month in 2006 for SLA-ILINFO:

  • January – 30
  • February – 24
